Treatment

Picture
Once symptoms begin to appear in a rabies infected person there is almost no way to avoid death. But there is a 28 day period in which the bitten person can be treated with prophylaxis (anitbiotics) to help cure the disease. So if someone is bitten they by an animal in the wild or even a domesticated animal they must go to a doctor and get tested for the deadly disease.
The first person ever recorded to have survived rabies after symptoms showed up was American teenager Jeanna Giese. She was bitten by a wild animal and then when symptoms started to show up the doctors used a new treatment regimen to save her. They induced a coma on her shutting off part of the brain to allow her immune system to fight the disease along with giving her drugs such as ketamine to fight it.
After a month of isolation and almost 3 months in the hospital she was healthy again and has not suffered any side effects from the coma. This new treatment is called the "milwakee protocol" and has been used on 35 different patients but only 4 survived it. This new way of treatment is very risky but the only option for those who have symptoms of the disease and are on the brink of death.
